Mr. D: I just LOVE your book! I think you’re the best new American writer out there. I count among my favorite writers Judith Martin (syndicated columnist who writes Miss Manners), Robert Fulghum (best known for “All I Really Need To Know I Learned In Kindergarten”), and Linda Richman (Mike Myers’ mother-in-law, author of “I’d Rather Laugh”). And I have to add you to that list! I would love to hear your treatment of other industries like information technology (computers, which I’ve done for almost 25 years), retail, or the medical field. I think you have a GREAT future as a writer. PLEASE think about pursuing that; you’re too witty to have all that genius waste away someplace beneath you!

a valued customer came into the restaurant drinking her greygoose on the rocks laughing while she read watiers rant. the next day she came in just to give me the book and also signed it saying she hopes im always her favorite customer. i read the book and loved it ive had similar experiences i have worked in upper class restaurants but i find myself in a better more welcoming environment with bosses that treat me like family. a pub and grub. but that doesnt mean i dont have to deal with the assholes that come into every restaurant but i love my job as a server and now a breakfast cook. i loved the book great job. and it makes me think i guess im in the waitress limbo….lol thank u for writing such a fabulous book we need more customers educated on what servers have to go through. muahzzzzzzzzzz

As a customer who has actually had you as their waiter on many, many occasions I must say how happy I am that you’ve met with such success. I laughed so hard – especially knowing so many of the players you aptly described. As a former server myself, I’m glad I was never an asshole to you!

Congratulations on your success! I read the book on Saturday (I did not want to put it down and did so only long enough to go out to dinner…which was a different experience even before finishing it). I just bought 5 copies for my friends. What a wonderful and full story about your journey..and insight into human behavior. I am sure there is something for everyone to relate to by observation or personal behavior. Keep writing…can’t wait for the next one.

I have just finished & enjoyed your book (which I did indeed buy–kaching!–in trade paperback, at San Diego Int’l Airport). If you have not already read it, I recommend to you at least the “restaurants” section of “Down & Out in Paris & London” by George Orwell. [Google that author & title to find the text online, if you can’t easily find a hardcopy.] Another time, & other places, but the human interactions & types in that milieu are essentially unchanged between his book & yours; also, I think he writes well.

Congrats on the NY Times Paperback Best Seller list! My husband was an actor (waiter) for years and the nicer the restaurant the more insane the stories he told. You’re a very witty writer and much fun to read. I bought the trade paperback at BJs Warehouse Club and read it very quickly. An excellent Summer read (or anytime read).

Just listened to the audiobook on a long car ride and it made the time fly by. As a former career waiter/catering manager and the mother of two young women currently in the restaurant business I could *totally* relate. Glad you’ve found your voice =)

It seems that I may have been living under a rock for the past 4 years because I only stumbled upon the existence of your blog (and book) last week. I’m not quite sure how this got by me.
But I picked-up your book last night and can’t put it down. Thank you for writing and sharing openly. Thank you for allowing me to reminisce. And most of all, thank you for reminding me why I never want to wait tables again.

I am a 22 year old waiter/college student at an Italian, family owned restaurant in Minnesota. Before this job I had a different, yet still often thankless customer service job that was acting as a mask for my fear of not pursuing something that actually mattered to me.I was afraid of screwing up and making the wrong choices. However I eventually took the leap of faith I needed to, quit that horrible job, and went back to school to become a teacher. While not a day goes by that I don’t wonder if I am still making the right choice I do it anyways. Your book has been another wonderful reminder to me of just how important it is to not let that fear keep me from pursuing my goals.
While I know this may sound strange to hear I would like to say that you should be extremely proud of yourself for all that you have/will achieve! Good luck to you sir and with sincerest thanks,

Kind of strange: I was just on Amazon, buying your paperback book. One seller (CastAway Books & Media) was trying to sell it for $514.99 + $3.99 shipping. Hope you get a percentage. Or maybe they send the proceeds to waiters!
