I have seen this happen. Not in France and not at a sushi bar, a guest from one table stole the tip from another as he was leaving. We chased the culprit for several blocks and literally scared the piss out of him when we threatened to call the police.
As far as I know in France there’s a service charge added to the bill automatically, so it’s not really the same as if one did it in the US or whereever else waiters get most of their wage from tips.
The waiters were arrested? I hope this was just a formallity during the investigation. The working stiffs deserve a freaking ticker tape parade down Main Street complete with a key to the city and a brass band for Criss-sakes! It’s great to see a couple of parasitic scumbags get there just rewards for once. Hats off to the “Sushi Seven”!!

I mean, here in Texas, you’re allowed to shoot people just for trespassing. These guys were holding the waiters at gunpoint and demanding money! Doesn’t make sense for the waiters to have to pay.
I think it depends on what happened exactly. Did they all jump on him and just stab him with intent to kill? The article makes it sound like there was a giant melee and that one guy may just have taken too many blows. It only takes one stab to kill if the stab is in the right place and goes deep. If there is argument for self defense, the waiters might get off, but if it went well beyond self defense, that will not be as easy to call.

Anyway, it really sucks to see a whole day’s work get stolen from under your nose. I don’t know if it’s worth killing for but it certainly isn’t worth going to jail for. That said, I would insist on at least hurting the thieves before calling the gendarmerie.

I think it’s time people defend themselves and their rights after being bullied. It seems to me that the law is kinder to criminals. They go to jail, come out and do what they do all over again.

Totally feel for the waiters – I agree one should be able to defend oneself and property. It’s just so easy for criminals to take something that does not belong to them.
One of my part-time jobs is a restroom attendant in a local night club – I learned the hard way not to turn my back on my tip jar. Third night out, while I ran some glasses out to the bar, someone helped themselves to my tips, my lip glosses and my pack of cigerettes I had out for customers. I was spitting nails – it was very hard to put a good face on to be pleasant for incoming customers. I can see where the urge to stab someone can be real strong.
Let’s see if I got this right: a pair of dirtbags come into a restaurant to commit a robbery, armed with a pistol and a stun gun. One of the robbers is killed by a member of the restaurant staff. Now, the staff have been arrested for killing the robber. Is self-defense and resistance to robbery as illegal in France as it is in England? Perhaps it is because I am an American – a well-armed American – that I cannot comprehend the subtle nuances of Continental justice.

I saw an employee steeling the tip I left for waiter who served me. I came out and call the manager to report it.
